Trauma-skilled: Competencies

These competencies will help you identify a combination of skills, knowledge, behaviours and attributes that will support effective practice at this level.

People working at a trauma-skilled level will:

  • Work in a way that understands the central importance of relationships and provides a sense of safety and trust, interacting with people in a way that prevents re-traumatisation
  • Provide compassionate, person-centred and individualised support and care in language people understand and help the individual of family to make their own decisions about the care and support that is offered to them and feeling safe to do so
  • Be able to recognise the impact that life experiences and social factors have on people
  • Understand the importance of trauma-informed environments and organisations
  • Prioritise self-care and supporting staff to work safely and within appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
