Trauma-aware: Competencies

These competencies will help you identify a combination of skills, knowledge, behaviours and attributes that will support effective practice at this level.

People working at a trauma-aware level will:

  • Understand that many people will have been affected by adversity and trauma in their lives
  • Understand the importance of compassion, kindness and supportive facilitating relationships withing the family, community and beyond
  • Be able to empathically recognise and support people who are distressed
  • Ability to foster supportive relationships withing families/other support networks and communities
  • Recognise the role that all individuals, organisations, and wider society play in challenging poverty and discrimination
  • Recognise the role that all individuals, organisation and wider society play in preventing and mitigating the negative impacts of adversity and trauma, and further exposure
  • Understand that exposure to trauma is common but not universal and can be overcome.
